LAMP Program helping students to improve academically and socially

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (May 11, 2011) – Chief Oil & Gas today announced that it has donated $134,000 to Pittsburgh Public Schools to help fund another year of the District’s Learning And Mentoring Program (LAMP), a program designed to help students succeed against the influences of violence, crime, drugs and gangs. The donation is part of Chief’s three-year, $402,000 commitment in support of LAMP.

"Chief Oil & Gas is proud to continue to support such an important program for Pittsburgh’s schools and the community," said Kristi Gittins, Vice President of Public Affairs for Chief Oil & Gas. "We are pleased to assist the LAMP program in making a difference in the lives of these students."

LAMP has been in place for five years and currently serves more than 100 youth in grades 4-12. An evaluation of the program after the 2009-2010 school year found significant improvements in academic performance, school attendance and behavior by participating students. Of the 107 students who have been matched with mentors in the program, 49 percent have improved school attendance and 58 percent had fewer disciplinary actions. Students also improved their grades in reading (20%) and math (28%).

"We are grateful to Chief for continuing to support our students by funding this initiative. We have seen how this program has positively impacted our students. By providing caring adult role models, LAMP is helping to prevent student involvement in gangs while encouraging academic success," said Errika Fearbry Jones, Coordinator, Teaching and Learning Environment, for the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Helping communities grow and prosper is important to Chief. The company has helped build libraries and playgrounds, provided college scholarships and funded much needed equipment for fire departments and other emergency response groups.

In Pennsylvania Chief has made donations to fund scholarships, and to local fire departments and emergency providers to ensure continued education.
