When Chief Oil & Gas began developing a Marcellus natural gas well in West Virginia within the Youghiogheny Watershed, students in Oakland, Maryland had a unique opportunity to study in their own backyard since their elementary school is on the border between Maryland and West Virginia.

There have been many public discussions about whether drilling in the Marcellus Shale has any impact on the environment and specifically to watersheds, so the students wanted to do some research of their own. Collecting and analyzing biological, chemical, weather and habitat data from nearby streams, Crellin Elementary School students have been conducting scientific research as part of their environmental curriculum.

To help with their research, Chief purchased water testing kits that include everything needed to conduct the studies. Chief also purchased a remote-monitored weather station to aid in their research.

Crellin principal Dr. Dana McCauley said, “I am excited that Chief has helped our kids have the chance to gain firsthand experience and knowledge about an issue that is in the headlines. Authentic learning is all about using our community and environment to teach skills. This is not just a science project – math skills are gained as they analyze the data, reading and writing improves when they research for more information then share what they have learned.”

Kristi Gittins, Vice President of Industry and Public Affairs at Chief, stated, “Chief enjoys being an active part of communities where we operate. This partnership with Crellin Elementary was a unique opportunity to demonstrate Chief’s commitment to protecting water and natural resources while teaching the students the importance of conducting their own research on topics important to their community.”
